Escobar to speak about democracy at Forester Lecture

Huntington, Ind. "Dr. Jorge Ivan Bula Escobar of Bogota, Colombia, will present the next Huntington University Forester lecture on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at 7 p.m. in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.

Escobar, who is currently the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Manchester College, will speak on Plan Colombia and the Search for Democracy in Latin America. The lecture is free and open to the public.

For nearly 20 years, Escobar has lectured on globalization, human rights and Latin American development. As the recent vice-dean of Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogota, he served as academic coordinator of the Ph.D. program in economic sciences. As a Fulbright Scholar this year at Manchester College in Manchester, Ind.., Escobar is teaching a course on globalization in Latin America and a seminar on the conditions behind Latin American human rights problems.

Escobar holds a doctorate in sociology from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and an economics degree from the University of Manchester in Great Britain.
