Huntington University Receives A+ Rating for Safest College Campuses in Indiana in 2027 Report

Huntington places third in campus safety in Indiana according to Niche report

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Huntington University has been recognized as one of the safest college campuses in Indiana by Niche, earning an A+ overall safety grade in the site’s 2027 college rankings and ranking third safest in the state.

The Niche rankings are based on a variety of campus safety factors. Notably, the campuses’ scores on campus crime rate, student surveys on safety and local crime grade. More information on how the score is calculated can be found on Niche's website.

"The 2027 Niche rankings reflect our commitment to a safe and prosperous campus at Huntington University,” said Campus Chief of Police Keirsh Cochran. “Each year, HU ranks among the safest campuses not only in the state of Indiana but in the country. That is a direct result of the efforts of not only my team of officers at the Huntington University Police Department, but all students, faculty and staff who are committed to excellence in all they do."

Cochran reflected on how this A+ level of safety is done through community partnerships as well as campus diligence.

“We rely heavily on community partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to ensure that our 90 acres are the safest place to pursue Christ, scholarship and service,” Cochran said.

This comes as updates in emergency preparedness have been and continue to be made across HU’s campus.

In the residence halls, the emergency communications flow chart for resident assistants was approved. Among other emergency response signage, these flow charts were posted in residence halls by the Office of Student Life.

Additionally, the campus-wide update of new security cameras has steadily continued. According to Cochran, the project is anticipated to be complete by the end of the 2027-2028 academic year.

The visible campus safety plans and updates have increased general safety awareness and confidence among the student body.

“Huntington University is as safe as it is because of the community it has,” said Student Body President and Resident Assistant Elijah Persinger. “It is due to all of work that campus police, campus chief of police, Keirsh Cochran, who I have personally seen protect students, and resident assistants, resident directors and staff have actively put in for student safety.”

Another source of pride for the Foresters is their ranking above other regional competitors, as Huntington ranked above Taylor University, Grace College, the University of Saint Francis, Bethel University and Indiana Wesleyan University.
