Robert E. Wilson Gallery to display alum’s photography

Huntington, Ind. " The Robert E. Wilson Gallery will host Photography of John Walz, an exhibit featuring the recent photographic works of Huntington College alumnus John Walz, starting September 9, and running through October 4. The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and before all Merillat Center for the Arts events. The public is invited to attend an artist reception for Walz on September 17, from 6-7:30 p.m., at the Wilson Gallery.

As a former photojournalist, Walz's work has been deeply influenced by his experience in capturing interesting and eye-catching photos that quickly attract attention.

I would have to make a photo that could go above the fold and grab a passer-by's attention, Walz said. I've found that folks have little interest in subtlety. I have carried over the importance of that one immediate quick point.

Walz finds personal meaning through the photographic process in which each photo is a small piece dislodged and reproduced out of the context of a whole to create something new.

Walz earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from Huntington College in 1995, and later received his Master of Fine Arts degree in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. Walz has worked as a photojournalist for both the Hillsdale Daily News (MI) and the Port Clinton News Herald (OH). He recently started a personal business venture, John Walz Photography. In 2003, Walz joined the faculty of Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. He is a 1999 winner of the SCAD Juried Alumni Show and has displayed exhibits at the Red Gallery in Savannah, Ga., and the Sandusky Cultural Center in Sandusky, Ohio.
