5 HU Webpages You Should Bookmark Right Now

To help you prepare for the first day of classes, I’ve gathered together some of my favorite HU academic resources.

We are officially less than one month away from the start of the fall 2023 semester, Foresters. Are you ready?

To help you prepare for the first day of classes, I’ve gathered together some of my favorite HU academic resources, webpages you will access repeatedly while a student. Although this list has new students in mind, returning HU students can also benefit from saving these resources in their web browser of choice.

1. The HU Portal

By now, you are likely at least somewhat familiar with the HU Portal, as accessing the Portal is an important step in the admissions and registration process. This resource will continue to be vital to your college success, so it is a good idea to bookmark the Portal if you haven’t already. The Portal is the place where you can check your schedule and your grades, request a transcript, access next semester’s schedule of courses, register for classes, check your meal plan balance, read the Student Handbook, register your on-campus vehicle, and more. Seriously, there are a lot of resources on the HU Portal!

2. Moodle

Huntington University uses Moodle as our online learning management system. Even if you attend classes in person, your classes will probably have a Moodle page. Your professors will provide more information about how to use Moodle for their classes, but for now it’s a good idea to bookmark Moodle so you are ready to access it. You can also access Moodle through the HU Portal. (See? I told you the Portal was full of resources.)

3. The HU Bookstore Online

If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to find the textbooks you need for the upcoming semester. You can do this through the HU Bookstore’s online storefront. All you have to do is enter your student ID number, and the Bookstore will pull up all of the materials you need and guide you from there. You’ll repeat this process every semester. While you’re on the site, you can also pick up the latest HU swag, including some exclusive online-only deals.

4. The Office of the Registrar’s Guide to Typical Programs & Checksheets

A Guide to Typical Programs is an outline of all of the classes you need to complete your degree, mapped out for you by semester and according to the requirements for your major. You can use the Guide while you are planning what courses you will take next semester with your academic advisor.

For those of us who love a good to-do list, Checksheets also provide a rundown of the classes required to graduate with your major, but they do so in a checklist format rather than a calendar format. You can print these checklists out and check classes off your list as the semesters roll by.

If you are interested in changing your major or adding another one, you can use these Guides and Checksheets as a starting place to discuss changes with your advisor.

5. The Academic Catalog

In my opinion, the Academic Catalog is a resource that all college students should know how to use. There are few questions that the Academic Catalog cannot answer, or at least so it seems to me (and I’ve been using it to answer my questions for a decade). Among some of my favorite features: descriptions of every class we offer at HU; an academic calendar that tells you when the semester starts, ends, and when we have breaks; a list of all the criteria required to graduate; and HU policies that you should be aware of but won’t memorize verbatim.

Don’t let the Academic Catalog’s page count deter you — it’s searchable, and you can jump to various sections by clicking through the Table of Contents. You don’t need to read the whole thing from cover to cover, and you definitely don’t need to print it out. Just bookmark it so that you can return to it again and again as you plan out your college experience. I suggest bookmarking the main Academic Catalog webpage rather than the PDF document, as we update the Academic Catalog periodically.
