Need a Spark? HU Theatre Presents “These Shining Lives”

A story of resilience and hope

The Huntington University Theatre Company is preparing to perform These Shining Lives, a true story about perseverance and hope in the middle of difficulty and oppression, this month. The play, written by Melanie Marnich, follows Catherine Donohue, a young woman who works for a watch company in the 1920s. As she and three of her coworkers soon discover, the paint they use to create details on the watches contains highly toxic radium, which leads to devastating health diagnoses and deaths. As Catherine and three other women pursue justice in a world where the health of workers did not matter, the audience is swept up by the resilience of women throughout history.

“One of the women in the play says that everyone dies twice: once when their physical bodies die, but then again when no one remembers them. I am looking forward to keeping the memories of these incredible woman alive by telling their story of strength and courage. People should be excited about the story of These Shining Lives because it is a story about four women who fight for justice and refuse to lose hope despite tragedy. It is a story that reminds us today to lean on each other and never take life for granted,” says cast member Renee Preston.

These Shining Lives will be performed in the Studio Theatre within the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
