Alumna recognized by Governor’s Council

Huntington, Ind. "Jennifer Boen, a 1971 alumna of Huntington University and a health and human services reporter for Fort Wayne, Ind.'s The News-Sentinel, is a recipient of the 2005 Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability Issues. I have won other awards but this one, I feel, is one of the most important as the story and issues have made a real difference in people's lives, Boen said.
The Governor's Council for People with Disabilities presents the annual award to acknowledge members of the media who fairly and accurately report on disability issues. Boen was one of three Indiana reporters to receive this year's recognition.
The media award gives reporters and editors something to work toward " stories that increase awareness about disability issues while being respectful of the disability community, said Council Executive Director Suellen Jackson-Boner.
Boen examined service station accessibility for people with disabilities in the Fort Wayne, Ind., area in her piece "At your service?"
An employee of The News-Sentinel for eight years, Boen won the same award in 2002 and earned an honorable mention last year in the category of publications with a circulation of less than 40,000.
Award winners will be recognized December 5-6, 2005, at the Council's Annual Conference for People with Disabilities in Indianapolis.
Boen was honored by the University in 2002 as one of the Alumni of the Year. In 2003, the Coalition for Christian Colleges & Universities named her a top alumna during Christian Higher Education Month.
