Brenn Hall remodeling begins

Huntington, Ind. " A major remodeling of Brenn Hall got underway in earnest today as heavy equipment tore through the facade of the building. Much more than a facelift, the $2.9 million construction project will include substantial renovations.

The 39-year-old building is being completely redesigned and repurposed. Originally a dedicated facility for science and mathematics instruction, Brenn Hall will be redeveloped into general classroom space and faculty offices " two critical needs following Huntington College's rapid enrollment growth.

The project is well-timed. Professors of the Division of Natural and Mathematical Sciences have just completed the relocation of scientific equipment and laboratory supplies to Huntington College's newly-completed Science Hall, scheduled to open for classes in September.

The redesigned Brenn Hall will have several new features:

Six classrooms to accommodate 30 to 40 students each

One small seminar room for advanced classes

Eight faculty offices and a faculty work area

An expanded Learning Center and Writing Center

A student lounge

Originally completed in 1963, Brenn Hall of Science was Huntington College's answer to President Eisenhower's call for more rigorous training in mathematics and science. For nearly four decades, Brenn Hall has been home to Huntington's programs in mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry and biology. This summer, those academic departments are taking up new quarters in HC's 91,000 square-foot Science Hall, the newest and largest facility on campus.

After remodeling, Brenn Hall will more closely resemble Loew Center, which adjoins it on the north side. The combined classroom center will be renamed Loew-Brenn Hall, and will accommodate Huntington College's programs in Bible and religion, business, education, English, history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

Enrollment has risen 73% since 1991 at the comprehensive Christian college. The Brenn Hall renovations, scheduled to be completed by Fall 2003, will help ensure maximum flexibility in class scheduling and provide much-needed offices and workspace for the growing faculty.

Huntington College offers graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 60 academic concentrations. Founded in 1897 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Huntington College is located on a contemporary, lakeside campus in Huntington, Indiana.
