College marks MLK Day with special service

HUNTINGTON, IN JANUARY 16, 1997 --- Huntington College will observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a commemoration service on January 20 at 1 p.m. in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The public is cordially invited to attend.

The service will celebrate "the value and diversity of mankind," says Dr. Robert K. Boozer, associate professor of psychology. "We will be singing, listening to the presentation of scripture, reflecting on a few of the things raised in our awareness by Dr. King in his own words, and hearing a few brief reflections from faculty and staff."

The commemoration service is sponsored by Christians United for Reconciliation and Equality (CURE), a task force of Huntington College students, faculty and staff who desire to promote unity on campus. CURE's mission is to "foster recognition of the value of the oneness of all mankind while encouraging the celebration of the uniqueness of individuals."

During the commemoration service, Dr. Boozer will be joined in offering reflection by Ms. Deanne "DeeDee" Addison, who played an instrumental role in organizing CURE. Addison serves as a residence director and as director of the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service. A graduate of Anderson University and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary with degrees in psychology, sociology, and Christian counseling, Addison has worked passionately for racial reconciliation through such efforts as establishing an interracial gospel choir at Anderson and serving as youth minister to a predominately African-American church in Detroit.

The theme of the service is "It's In Every One of Us," drawn from the song by David Pomeranz. Students participating in the program include Wes Akers of New Castle; Elizabeth Fergusson of Columbia City; Caleb Nei of Huntington; and Nate Perry of Convoy, Ohio. The invocation will be given by Dr. Norris Friesen, vice president for student development.
