Congressman Souder to speak at Huntington College

HUNTINGTON, IN OCTOBER 2, 1996 --- Congressman Mark Souder (R-4th Dist. IN) will present the fourth in this semester's Forester Lecture Series at Huntington College on Tuesday, October 8, at 8 p.m. in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Souder will describe the challenges, successes, and setbacks he has seen as a member of the 104th Congress.

In November 1994, Mark Souder defeated a three-term incumbent to win Indiana's Fourth District Congressional seat. Souder became one of 73 freshman members on the Republican side of the aisle.

Souder's leadership abilities were noted at once by his new colleagues, who elected him Vice President of the 1994 class of freshman members of Congress.

As he faces his first re-election challenge, his Forester Lecture will survey the accomplishments and areas of concern of the current Congress. He will also reflect on his experiences as a freshman Republican in the House of Representatives.

The Forester Lecture Series is designed to bring interesting persons and topics to the attention of Huntington College students and the public. Previous lectures this fall have featured Rabbi Richard Safran describing political changes in Israel and Libertarian candidate Ken Bisson addressing the "separation of school and state." Charles Curie, Pennsylvania's Deputy Secretary for Mental Health, will present the next Forester Lecture on Monday, October 7. Curie will address the importance of individual responsibility to the formation of public policy and to one's own personal life. Still to come in the Forester Lecture Series: a November 11 lecture by author Quentin Schultze on Christian evangelistic uses of the Internet, and a November 18 lecture by social psychologist David Myers entitled, "Who is Happy?"
