Devin Reed Realizing the Dream at Huntington

Huntington, Ind. " Devin Reed, a Huntington College youth ministry major from Akron, Ind., was recently honored at the 2004 Realizing the Dream banquet in Indianapolis. Reed was one of 33 other outstanding first-generation college students honored that night. He was given the opportunity to recognize a teacher that had inspired him to achieve success both personally and academically. Reed chose his High School math teacher, Terry Screeton from Tippecanoe Valley High School in Akron. Terry was the youth pastor of my church growing up as well as one of my high school math teachers, Reed said. He obviously understands the value of education and knows how important it is to pursue further academic goals after high school. Terry was instrumental in my developing as a person in middle school and high school both as a teacher at school, a youth leader at church, and a friend in life.
Realizing the Dream is a program that honors first-generation students who have excelled not only academically but also in leadership and campus activities in their freshman year at Indiana colleges. A grant to the Independent Colleges of Indiana from the Lilly Endowment makes Realizing the Dream able to contribute $1,000 towards each student's continuing college education.
The program acknowledges the role that parents and teachers play in determining the direction a student takes as he or she progresses through school. After each individual college chooses a student, that student gets the opportunity to name a teacher in elementary or secondary school that most influenced him or her to attend college. A $1,000 professional development award is given to each of these teachers in appreciation of the good they have done in a student's life.
