Diana Sowers Nominated for Teaching Award

HUNTINGTON, IN JUNE 3, 1996 --- Huntington College education faculty have nominated Diana Sowers for the Outstanding Cooperating Teacher Award presented by the Association of Teacher Educators - Indiana Unit (ATE-I). Sowers will be among those honored at the association's annual fall conference at Turkey Run State Park, October 20-22, 1996.

Sowers teaches fifth grade at Roanoke Elementary School. A ten-year veteran of the classroom, she has also taught grades one, four and six. She has served as an elementary school counselor and taught summer school for several grades. She has sponsored the Little Hoosiers Club, Computer Club, and Student Council. She has also coached fifth and sixth grade girls basketball.

"Diana has supervised four student teachers and several junior-level pre-service teachers," explained Cindy Steury, director of clinical experiences for Huntington College's department of education. "She has also given several seminars for our pre-service teachers on discipline and classroom management."

"Diana has been a good friend of Huntington College and an excellent model and coach for our pre-service teachers," Steury said. "She regularly attends our meetings and offers advice for strengthening our program. She is willing to go beyond the level of giving feedback and also volunteered to lead seminars for our students. She has also opened her room for our students to observe."

"As a supervisor, she has found a balance between support and freedom, allowing our student teachers to bloom and grow in a positive, nurturing environment."
