Dr. Jeff Webb receives Professor of the Year honor

Huntington, Ind. " Dr. Jeff Webb, assistant professor of History, was awarded the distinguished Professor of the Year honor at the 32nd annual Forester Night at Huntington College on Tuesday. The award is voted on by the student body and presented each year at the Forester Night ceremonies.

I was deeply honored to be voted by the students as the Professor of the Year, said Dr. Webb. The award was unexpected, but much appreciated. I think it is a testament to the support I have been given by my colleagues at Huntington College who taught me how to teach in the first place.

Dr. Webb began teaching at Huntington College in the fall of 1999, when this year's graduating class began its freshmen year. I am struck by the timing of this award, as Forester Night celebrated the successes of the senior class. I started my full-time teaching career with those seniors, and I feel a special bond with them. They endured my awkward, and on-going, transition from pointy-headed academic to classroom teacher. A part of me will leave with them when they go, said Webb.

In his acceptance speech on Tuesday, Dr. Webb thanked his wife, Jill, for making it possible for him to finish graduate school and pursue his calling to become a teacher. Both Jill and I consider the award a real blessing, from both the students at Huntington and from the Lord, whom we both serve, he concluded.

Dr. Webb earned his BA in History from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1987, his MA in History from Cleveland State University in 1989, and his PhD in History from the University of Chicago in 2001. He has served as instructor at Roosevelt University and Trinity Christian College and as a Lecturer and Writing Intern at the University of Chicago. He has earned several grants and awards, most recently the NEH Summer Institute Fellowship (2002) and the Faculty Development Grant (2002).

Dr. Webb has presented scholarly papers on American History at numerous academic conferences. He has been published in H-Net and Religious Studies Review and has contributed to American National Biography; The Encyclopedia of Chicago History; Encyclopedia of Fundamentalism; Ground Warfare; An International Encyclopedia; and Encyclopedia of the Midwest. Dr. Webb was the co-facilitator at the Workshop on Interactive Teaching Methods for the School of Management and Business at Beijing Institute of Technology in 2002. He is also the co-coordinator of the Forester Lecture Series at Huntington College.
