Forester Lecture Series kicks off season with author

Huntington, Ind. " The Forester Lecture Series will present Mr. John Vining as its first lecturer of the 2004-2005 season. A distinguished Huntington College alum and published author, Vining will present, A Journey into the Past, on Thursday, September 9, at 7 p.m. The lecture, held in the Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts, will highlight the role that the Christian liberal arts education had in preparing him for his business, writing and publishing vocations. The public is cordially invited to attend, and admission is free. During the lecture, Vining will also offer a glimpse into his new book, Violet Lightning: A Blueprint for Japan's Victory in the Pacific, 1941-'42 (forthcoming in October, 2004). The book details the strategic maneuvers of the Japanese and the Allies in the early years of World War II and brought one reviewer to remark, "Those who read it will never again look upon the history of WWII in the Pacific as a certain and forgone conclusion."
Vining graduated from Huntington College in 1977, with a degree in accounting. He earned the title of Chartered Casualty Underwriter in 1987, and holds the designation of Associate in Accounting, Finance, Management, Automation Management and Personal Insurance with the Insurance Institute of America. Currently, he is Manager of Agency Services for Central Insurance Company in Ohio City, Ohio.
He anticipates the publication of a book on the western expansion of the United States in the 1790-1820 period, titled The Trans-Appalachian Wars, 1790-1818: The Pathways to America's First Empire. The book intends to make the story of military conflict in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana during the early national period accessible to a wider audience.
