Forester Night Awards Given

Huntington, Ind. " The 30th annual Huntington College Forester night was held on Tuesday, May 8. This ceremony honors both faculty and students with awards given to Professor of the Year, Dr. Linda Urschel and Foresters of the Year, Molly Deuberry and Dustin Abshire. Departmental awards were also given to an outstanding student from each academic department and students recognized in Who's Who Among American College Students were honored. Dr. Linda Urschel was named Professor of the Year by the Huntington College student body. Dr. Urschel, Professor of English and Department Chair, received her Ph.D. in English from Ball State University. She specializes in developmental writing, and has participated in professional meetings and published several articles. Her hobbies are folklore, oral history, and reading "especially murder mysteries. She often travels with her family to historical sites. Dr. Urschel is very active in her church, Central Christian, where she serves as Elder, teaches the older adult Sunday School class, and sings in the choir.
Students also chose Dustin Abshire and Molly Deuberry as Foresters' of the Year based on their strong spiritual leadership, involvement in campus activities, demonstration of genuine concern for others, and being a conscientious student.
Dustin Abshire is a youth ministry major from Brownsburg, Indiana. He is the son of Gary and Nancy Abshire and a graduate of Pendleton Heights High School. In his years at Huntington he has been a member of student senate all four years, serving this year as student body secretary. He has also served as a resident assistant, freshmen mentor, and men's basketball manager. He has been a member of the Dean's advisory council and the student activities board. He says of Huntington, I love this school. I have developed deep and meaningful relationships with professors, administrators, staff, and students alike. The benefit of these interactions has been invaluable. I have discovered that I will always learn more from relationships with people than I will from books alone. I see this award as a great honor from the student body. After graduation, Abshire will be taking a graduate assistantship in student affairs administration in higher education at Ball State University. He will obtain his master's degree through this program in June 2002.
Molly Deuberry is the daughter of Jeffrey and Mary Deuberry of Chesterton, Indiana and is a graduate of Chesterton High School. She has completed a double major in history and oral communication in the three years she has been at Huntington. Along with her studies, she has been a member of Alpha Chi, a national honor society for College students. She has also served as a resident assistant for two years, and has been on student senate for three, two of those years as student body treasurer. Deuberry says, I am so privileged to have studied under the professors here. The relationships I have developed have been crucial to my personal development. I am a better student, a more critical thinker, and a more compassionate person because of Huntington College.
Ms. Deuberry was also presented with the 2001 Outstanding Scholar Award at Forester Night, an award voted by the active members of Huntington's local Alpha Chi chapter. The award goes to the graduating senior member of Alpha Chi who has demonstrated academic excellence, has contributed positively to the academic climate of Huntington College, and has shown high qualities of personal excellence that epitomize the ideals of Alpha Chi and Huntington College. Ms. Deuberry served as president of the local chapter this past year and was the spearhead in organizing the various program activities that contributed substantially to the local chapter's selection as the National Chapter of the Year for Alpha Chi, 2001. This fall, Deuberry will be attending law school in the Honors College at Valparaiso University School of Law on a graduate fellowship.
