Sally Van Orden is a professor of fine art at West Chester University and received her Master of Fine Art degree from Texas Tech University in art/interior design in 1988. Van Orden states that her multi-media background has lead her to the unusual medium of Serti Silk Painting. Serti silk painting is a historic and traditional medium used in China. The content includes abstracted visual images of her travels and interest in architectural and organic structures and the visual textures and colors within. The initial inspiration may be from a small detail to a large structure or landscape and may combine images to create compositions.

The process is a large part of the artwork; it is like a dialogue that takes place between the silk canvas and myself, states Van Orden.
