Gustafson to present lecture about laser applications
FOR RELEASE: Wednesday, November 1, 2006
Huntington, Ind.-At 4 p.m. on Nov. 10, Huntington University will host Dr. Terry L. Gustafson from the Ohio State University in a Christians in Scientific Careers Seminar Series. The presentation is titled "Analytical Applications of Lasers: From Femtoseconds to Chemistry." The lecture is free and open to the public.
Gustafson is the director of the Center for Chemical and Biophysical Dynamics at the Ohio State University. The event will be held in Hiner Hall of the Science Hall. Refreshments will be served.
Gustafson is also an active Christian who has been involved in mentoring faculty and students in the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at Ohio State. In addition, he will give a "Christian World Views and Science" talk regarding the concept of worldviews and how worldviews influence the scientific process in a 3 p.m. class immediately preceding the seminar, also in Hiner Hall. Visitors may attend both the 3 p.m. lecture and the 4 p.m. presentation if desired.
Gustafson received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry and physics at Moorhead State University (Minnesota) in 1975 and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Purdue University in 1979. He worked for nine years at Sohio Research and Development (later BP America Research and Development) before joining the faculty at Ohio State University in 1989. He has been a visiting scientist in the Molecular Spectroscopy Laboratory at the Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology in Japan and a visiting professor at the Universite des Sciences et Technologies de Lille in France. He won the George Rappaport Award presented by the Ohio Valley Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy and the John T. Mount and Ruth Weimer Mount Award in 2000 for outstanding service to Ohio State University and its students. In 2001, he was presented with the Honors Faculty Service Award by the Arts and Sciences Colleges and the Outstanding Teaching Award by the Arts and Sciences Colleges Student Council.
Gustafson has more than 110 peer-reviewed publications in various areas of chemical spectroscopy. His current research interests include the study of solvent/solute interactions using picosecond transient Raman spectroscopy, the elucidation of charge carrier mechanisms in electroluminescent conducting polymers using time-resolved spectroscopies, and the investigation of energy transfer and charge separation processes in photosystem II.
