HC students help lead Book Jam

Huntington, Ind. " Huntington County Community School Corporation, Huntington College and Project Challenge/GT Services have teamed up to present Book Jam. This collaboration between Huntington College students and HCCSC provides an opportunity for quality, in-depth conversation based on literature. The program strives to promote literacy and explore ideas with discussion-based approaches inspiring reflection and thought. Book Jam is facilitated by Huntington College junior elementary education majors. Andrea Webb, Allison Cool, Lori Grable, Leslie Deter, Lori Merkle, Stacy Wells, Candace Curfman, Jennifer Amstutz, Heather Beck, Erin Groth, Candace Rose, Kaley Fode, and Jessica Johnson serve as leaders for literature circles that engage students in grades 4-7 in discussion and activities based on four selected books.
The books featured in the Book Jam series are historical fiction and nonfiction that reflect cultural diversity and life at different times in our nation's history, said Cynthia Steury, the Assistant Dean for Faculty Development, Director of Clinical Experiences, and Associate Professor of Education at Huntington College.
Students participating in Book Jam will read and discuss Bud, Not Buddy, a Newbery winner by Christopher Paul Curtis, Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, The Day Martin Luther King, Jr., Was Shot by Jim Haskins and A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Newton Peck.
The Huntington College students and twenty-one students from the Huntington community currently meet on Thursday evenings, February 12 through March 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the model classroom of Loew-Brenn Hall on the Huntington College campus.
Trace Hinesley, Director of Special Programs for Huntington Schools, along with Steury coordinated the Book Jam event.
