Anna Karenina tells a tale about love and marriage among the Russian aristocracy in the 1870s. Anna, a young, elite woman married to a powerful government minister, falls in love with the elegant Count Vronsky; she becomes pregnant by him, and leaves her husband Karenin and her son Serezha to live with her lover. Despite the intervention of friends such as her brother (himself a frequent adulterer), she is unable to obtain a divorce and lives isolated from the society that once glorified her. As a man, Vronsky enjoys comparative social freedom, which plunges Anna into increasing intense fits of jealousy in her struggle to bear her plight.
