HC Theatre Presents ‘Steel Magnolias’

HUNTINGTON, IN March 27, 1996 -- Huntington College Theatre will present "Steel Magnolias" this weekend at the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Few tickets remain for the show.

The Huntington College studio theatre has been transformed into a beauty parlor in Chinquapin, Louisiana. The story of "Steel Magnolias," made popular by the 1990 movie version starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Darryl Hannah, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacClaine, follows the lives and friendships of six southern women. The stage play, while involving fewer characters, focuses more on the women as individuals. The relationship between these women grows stronger as each individual copes with the triumphs and tragedies of life.

"The six women we meet...are certainly unique creations," said Nancy Anderson of Roanoke. "They have learned to love each other in spite of their quirks and sometimes because of them."

Anderson, a senior at Huntington College, is serving as guest director for the production. She plans to graduate this spring with a double major in theatre and educational ministries.

"Steel Magnolias" opens Thursday, March 28 and will run through Sunday, March 31. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 8 p.m., while the Sunday performance will start at 7 p.m. In response to popular demand, a Saturday matinee has been added and will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students and senior citizens, $5 for adults. For ticket information, please call the Huntington College Theatre box office at (260) 356-6000, extension 2075.
