High School Mathematics Competition held at HC

Huntington, Ind. "The Spring 2002 Huntington College Mathematics Competition will be held this Friday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Habecker Dining Commons Banquet Rooms. The Huntington College Mathematics Competition is provided as a means of fostering mathematical interest and expertise among high school students. The competition consists of three parts: the written exam, individual ciphering, and a team problem-solving event. The written exam consists of 20 multiple choice questions from mathematics topics, ranging from beginning algebra through calculus. Competitors are given 40 minutes to complete the exam. The questions allow the use of a graphing calculator, and the score for each team member on the written test will be added to the team score and to the individual score.
During the individual competition, each competitor is given a problem to complete within a two-minute time interval without the aid of a calculator. Each individual completes the problem as quickly as possible. Points are granted to the individual and to the team based on how quickly an accurate response is given. Competitors only have one chance to turn in a solution.
During the team problem-solving portion of the competition, a multi-faceted problem will be given to the entire school team to complete. The team is responsible to work together to distribute the tasks to complete the problem. Often these problems require a graphing calculator task as well as a written task. Points are granted to the team based on how quickly the response is given. Teams can only submit one solution.
High school teams competing in the competition include: Ayersville High School (Defiance, Ohio), Huntington North High School, Kokomo Area Schools at Home, Marion High School, North Miami High School (Denver, Ind.), and Oak Hill High School (Converse, Ind.). Ben Eggleston, a junior mathematics major at Huntington College, is the competition coordinator.
