High school students compete in HC Spring Math Contest

Huntington, Ind. "The semiannual Huntington College High School Mathematics Competition was held at Huntington College on April 21. Hamilton Southeastern High School won the team honors with 595 points, followed by Marion High School and Ayersville (Ohio) High School with 500 points. Eight area high school teams met to compete for individual and team awards in demonstration of mathematical ability. The teams were comprised of Ayersville Local Schools of Defiance, Ohio, Angola High School of Angola, KASH (Kokomo Area Schools at Home) of Kokomo, Marion High School of Marion, North Miami High School of Denver, Southwood High School of Wabash, Hamilton Southeastern of Fishers, and Adams Central of Monroe.
Hamilton Southeastern accounted for two of the three individual winners with senior A.J. Goldman taking the gold medal and his teammate Aaron Hershberger earning the silver. Ayersville's Tim Doenges picked up third-place honors and a bronze medal.
The mathematics competition was made up of three rounds. The first round was a 20 question written exam comprised of questions from algebra through calculus. Students could earn a total of 100 points for the exam. The individual round of the competition was made up of 10 questions. Students were given two minutes to complete each question. Questions answered correctly within the first minute awarded the student with 10 points while questions answered correctly in the second minute received five points. The final round, the team round, provided additional points for the team score. Students were provided with a multi-task problem that was best solved through cooperative efforts of the team. A total of 50 points was possible for the final round.
Eric Throne, a freshman mathematics education major from Stryker, Ohio, coordinated the competition under the training of graduating mathematics and accounting major, Ben Eggleston. Dr. Patrick Eggleton, Associate Professor of Mathematics, assisted in preparation, while Jeffery Lehman, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, supervised. The goal of the competition is to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics.
