HU Music Department releases 2005-2006 schedule

Huntington, Ind. "Annual favorites top the list of Huntington University's 2005-2006 Music Department schedule of performances. With its annual Ensemble Concert Series, Afternoon Concert Series, and music festivals, this HU music season offers a variety of music featuring student, professor, guest and community performers.

Huntington University will start the fall season off with the Third Annual Huntington Area Invitational Band Festival on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. The festival features the bands of Huntington North High School, Riverview and Crestview Middle Schools, and the Huntington University Wind Ensemble in an evening of exciting instrumental favorites.

On Wednesday, October 12 at 4:30 p.m., HU music majors and minors will perform in an All-Area Music Student Recital. This first recital in a series of six will feature vocal, instrumental, solo and chamber music performances. Other All-Area Music Student recitals will be held on November 9 and 30, March 8, April 5, and April 26 at 4:30 p.m. in the Longaker Recital Hall.

On October 15 at 3:00 p.m., Sarah Prater, a Huntington University senior music composition major, will give her senior recital in the Zurcher Auditorium. Other HU seniors to be featured in recitals throughout the year include Leah Leland, flute (Nov. 19), Rusty Eshleman, voice (Feb. 11), Maria Rhodes, voice (March 31), Dana Frick, voice (April 1), and Brian Welfle, oboe (April 22).

On Sunday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m., the Huntington University Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, Women's Chorale and Handbells will present an evening of Reflections at College Park Church. The performance will feature music to inspire inner reflection and the spirit of peace.

The Huntington University Concert Choir and Columbia City's Blue River Big Band will break out the big band sound for an evening of jazz and big band musical offerings on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m. Jazz Time will be held in the Zurcher Auditorium.

On Thursday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m., faculty artists, Dr. John Thompson and Professor Amy Prickett will perform in the Zurcher Auditorium. Thompson is assistant professor of voice at Huntington University.

The Huntington University Wind Ensemble, Women's Chorale, Brass Ensemble, and Handbells will usher in The Spirit of Christmas on Friday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m., with an evening of holiday songs and Scripture. Then on December 4 at 7:30 p.m., the Huntington University Concert Choir and Orchestra will join forces with the Community Festival Chorus in the 51st annual performance of Handel's Messiah at St. Mary's Church in Huntington. HU music faculty will serve as vocal soloists, conductor, and orchestra principles for the performance of this powerful and timeless masterpiece.

BandFest 2006 will kick off the new year on February 5 at 2:00 p.m., in the Zurcher Auditorium. Area band students of all ages are invited to participate in an exciting weekend of clinics, rehearsals and fun. The HU Wind Ensemble will combine with clinic participants and U.S. Military clinicians in a Gala Concert featuring a wide variety of great band literature.

On February 22 at 4:30 p.m., HU will welcome the talented pianist, Elena Abuladze. A native of Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, Abuladze's repertoire includes works for piano by Bach, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Schumann, and Rachmaninoff. She will teach a piano Masterclass on February 22 at 4:30 p.m., in Longaker Recital Hall. She will then give a performance the following evening on February 23 at 7:30 p.m.

The Annual Longaker Honors Recital will be held on Friday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m., in the Longaker Recital Hall. A rigorous audition process produces the most talented young musicians of the HU Music Department performing on piano, wind, string, and percussion instruments, or singing.

On April 21 at 7:30 p.m., the Sixth Annual Concerto Winners Concert will feature the winners of the HU Concerto Competition held in October. The concert will showcase HU's talent in instrument and voice as well as one extraordinarily gifted area high school musician.

The HU music season will conclude with International Fare on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. The evening will feature exotic melodies from around the world as performed by the HU Wind and Jazz Ensembles.
