Huntington art students return from Italy tomorrow

HUNTINGTON, IN JANUARY 16, 1997 --- Eighteen Huntington College students will return from January Term studies in Italy tomorrow. They have spent the past several weeks on a study tour concentrating on the historical art and architecture of Rome, Florence, Assisi, Pompeii, and Capri.

The tour began with a walking tour of Florence, including a visit to the Academia, home of Michelangelo's David. Students then traveled to Assisi and explored the Basilica de San Francesco, studying Giotto's fresco of the life of Saint Francis. In Rome, the class visited the Trevi Fountain, the Forum Romanum, and the Colosseum, among other architectural sites. The class then spent a day at the Vatican, touring St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.

After another day in and around Rome, the class went on to Pompeii to examine evidence of how Romans lived 2000 years ago, preserved for all time by the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Today, the last day of the study tour, the class is visiting the Isle of Capri, exploring the Piazzsetta di Capri and the village of Anacapri.

Students prepared for the trip by reading and studying some of the major art works to be seen. During the study tour, each student kept a journal recording their experiences and impressions.
