Huntington Brass Ensemble to perform in Wawaka

Huntington, Ind.-Wawaka Church of the Brethren in Wawaka, Ind., will host the Huntington Brass Ensemble at 3 p.m. on April 22.

The Huntington Brass Ensemble is a college/community organization made up of people of a variety of backgrounds who all love to perform brass music. Participants include off-campus community people, Huntington University professors and students from outside the Department of Music, and music majors. The ensemble performs off campus every semester, participating in worship services at area churches, and performing concerts at a variety of venues ranging from area high schools to retirement communities. The Huntington Brass Ensemble also performs frequently on the Huntington campus, particularly at the baccalaureate and commencement ceremonies every May.

The Huntington Brass Ensemble repertoire for spring 2007 encompasses a wide variety of musical styles, including original works for brass as well as transcriptions of music originally written for mediums other than brass. Original brass works include "Turmmusik" by German composer Karl Marx (not the well-known Marxist philosopher) and "Suite" by Danish composer Hans Melchior Brugk. The Huntington Brass Ensemble also will perform "Thunder and Blazes," a famous circus march by Julius Fucik, a Czechoslovakian composer and bandmaster who was sometimes referred to as the "Bohemian Sousa." In celebration of Mozart's 250th birthday, the Huntington Brass Ensemble is performing a transcription of Mozart's "Alleluja."
