Huntington College presents ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’

HUNTINGTON, IN -- Huntington College Theatre will present "The Importance of Being Earnest" on the mainstage of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on November 9, 10 and 11 at 8.p.m.

"Earnest" is a parody of Victorian society. Two friends, John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, discuss going between homes in the city and in the country. They each have different names for their retreats; Worthing describing his as going to "see brother Earnest."

Two ladies enter the picture. Through comedic events they end up at "Brother
Earnest's" with John and Algernon, each man posing as "Earnest." The ladies
each fall in love with Earnest, based on their view that the name is
representative of what kind of person he is. The climax comes when the ladies
discover they are both engaged to Earnest, though he is a different person for
each.

"It's a comedy of manners," guest director Chib Gratz explains. "It was Oscar
Wilde's best attempt to poke fun at the English aristocracy."

Gratz, a Manchester, Indiana native, directed and designed the sets for HC's
performances of "The Importance of Being Earnest." She is a graduate of
Manchester College and Indiana University, having received her MFA in theater
scenic and costume design. She has led college teaching workshops throughout
the country and has also spent numerous years with theater companies across
the nation designing sets and constumes.

The box office opens for "Earnest" today. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for
students and senior citizens. Box office hours are 1-5 p.m. weekdays. For
