Huntington College revives English honor society

Huntington, Ind. "The Huntington College English Department revived its chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, with an induction ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 2. Originally established in 1993, the HC chapter has been inactive for several years. Six students were inducted including, Matt Ditzler (Huntington, Ind.), Tai Mauney (Anderson, Ind.), Ben Merchant (North Manchester, Ind.), Jen Stults (Huntington, Ind.), Joe Urschel (Huntington, Ind.) and Lindsey Van Gelder (Berne, Ind.). New officers were also installed with Mauney serving as president, Stults as vice president and Merchant as secretary.
Having the students inducted and officers elected was exactly what was needed to lay a firm foundation for the organization's lasting presence on campus, said chapter sponsor, Dr. Todd Martin, assistant professor of English.
The true advantage of such an honor society, continued Martin, is the fostering of community and accountability among individuals who have a love of the written word and who understand the fulfillment and the intellectual challenge which can be found there " whether it is studying a significant literary text or struggling to create a work of one's own.
Being a member of the honor society allows students to be eligible for numerous scholarships and internships. They may also submit creative works to the organization's literary journal for possible publication.
Founded in 1897, Huntington is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts, offering graduate and undergraduate degrees in more than 50 academic concentrations.
