FOR RELEASE: Monday, March 12, 2001
Huntington, Ind. "The Huntington College Concert Choir, along with the Brass Ensemble and Handbell Choir, will open its Spring Tour 2001 "Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs in the Merillat Centre for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13. The concert will be the first of five shows over the following Spring Break week. The annual tour will stop for two dates in Pennsylvania before heading north for additional performances in Ontario, Canada.
The theme for this year's tour is derived from the New Testament writings of Paul: Admonish one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making music in your heart to the Lord. The concert program will include anthems based on psalm texts, such as Berger's setting of Psalm 145:15-16, The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee. The hymn section of the program includes Charles Stanford's When in Our Music God is Glorified and Mozart's Lenten chorale Ave Verum Corpus. Finally, the concert is capped off with exuberant spirituals like Dawson's Soon-Ah-Will-Be-Done, Kingsley's Shepherd Me, Lord? and Hogan's I'm Gonna Sing Till the Spirit Moves in My Heart.
The concerts and worship services will also feature students reading scripture and sharing their testimonies with the various congregations. The Handbell Choir, under the direction of Professor Darlene Burkett, will share its ministry with arrangements of Crown Him with Many Crowns, There is a Redeemer, Medley on the Cross, What Wondrous Love is This, and When the Saints Go Marching In .
The Concert Choir is led by Dr. Janice Fulbright, Chair of the Huntington College Music Department, who has had an international performing career as a contralto soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras and in several top opera houses in Europe and the United States. She will share some information about the vision of Huntington College and the Music Department with each of the churches during the tour. Dr. Fulbright, Professor Burkett, and the students will be available to talk with any young people in the congregations about Huntington College or about their walk with Christ.
