Huntington to host Department of Education visit day
FOR RELEASE: Wednesday, February 21, 2007
Huntington, Ind.-Huntington University's Department of Education is dedicated to developing effective stewards of knowledge, learner development, learning environments and instruction. On March 1, the department will share these ideas with prospective students by hosting a group visit day. "Our hope is to acquaint prospective students with the strengths of our program and the experiences they will have if they choose to come to HU," said Cindy Steury, associate professor of education and assistant dean for faculty development.
The university has seen a dramatic increase in scheduled visits for the current year. With approximately 300 more visits this year compared to last, the Admissions Department encourages prospective students to attend one of several group visit days.
Any high school sophomore, junior or senior wishing to pursue a future in elementary, secondary, middle school or special education is encouraged to attend.
"Visitors will have the opportunity to meet other students who are serious about becoming educators," said Steury. "This is encouraging and affirming because it allows visitors to feel like they are part of a group of people like them."
Events for the day will include touring the campus, attending a chapel service, eating lunch with faculty and current students of the education department, and participating in classes specific to the visitors' interests. Discussions for the day will take place in HU's model classroom. This room is designed to replicate a typical elementary classroom in a public school system so students practically apply what they are learning.
"During this time we will discuss our program's accreditation through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the foundation of knowledge our liberal arts program gives educators, and the options students will have through our different programs," said Steury.
Although visitors will participate in the visitation day as a group, there will be time for individual meetings with the professors. Admissions counselors will wrap up the visit by discussing the admissions process and financial aid with the students and their parents.
