Huntington to host high school mathematics contest

Huntington, Ind. "Today, Huntington University will host a high school mathematics competition from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Hiner Hall on the second floor of the Science Hall. Twenty-eight students from seven high schools will be challenged with a three-part competition consisting of a written exam, individual ciphering, and a team problem-solving event. The schools represented include Adams Central High School of Monroe, Ind.; Ayersville High School of Defiance, Ohio, Compass Homeschools of Andrews, Ind.; Hamilton Southeastern High School of Fishers, Ind.; North Miami High School of Denver, Ind.; Southern Wells High School of Poneto, Ind.; and Temple Christian School of Lima, Ohio.
The written exam consists of 20 multiple choice questions from mathematics topics ranging from beginning algebra through calculus. Competitors are given 40 minutes to complete the exam. The questions allow the use of a graphing calculator. The score for each team member on the written test will be added to the team score and to the individual score.
During the individual competition each competitor is given a problem to complete without the aid of a calculator within a two-minute time interval. Each individual completes the problem as quickly as possible. Points are granted to the individual and to the team based on how quickly an accurate response is given. Competitors only have one chance to turn in a solution.
During the team problem solving portion of the competition, a multi-faceted problem will be given to the entire school team to complete. The team is responsible to work together to distribute the tasks to complete the problem. Often these problems require a graphing calculator task as well as a written task. Points are granted to the team based on how quickly the response is given. Teams can only submit one solution.
