Huntington University board elects new members

Huntington, Ind.-The Huntington University Board of Trustees elected four new board members during its fall meeting, among them Candace Curie, Calvin Hawkins, Brooks Fetters and Dalton Jenkins.

Candace Curie serves as the president and CEO of OB Unlimited, LLC, in Gaithersburg, Md. She has lead and participated in programs with a variety of organizations, including chambers of commerce, faith-based organizations and non-profits.

Prior to establishing OB Unlimited, LLC, Curie spent 10 years as a chamber of commerce president/CEO in Bethlehem, Pa., and Gaithersburg, Md.

Curie currently serves or has served on numerous association and non-profit boards, including in elected officer positions. She also has been appointed by state, county and city officials to several advisory committees and taskforces.

She has been recognized for her commitment and leadership with several awards, including the nationally recognized Athena Award in 2002 and the 1998 Bethlehem YWCA Woman of the Year Award.

Curie holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Huntington University.

Calvin Hawkins serves as a Lake Superior Court judge. Prior to his position as a judge, he was a private attorney in Gary, Ind., specializing in civil and church litigation, bankruptcy law, probate and family law.

Hawkins was Huntington's commencement speaker in 1998 when he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In 1975, he was named Alumnus of the Year by the university. Hawkins received the Huntington University Centennial Medallion in 1997.

He also served on the President's Advisory Council on Excellence at his alma mater as well as on the alumni board of directors. In addition, he has taught constitutional development as an adjunct faculty member.

Along with his undergraduate degree from Huntington University, Hawkins earned a law degree from Howard University and a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological seminary.

He is a recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Social Theology Award; Jonathan M. Daniels Fellowship Award; and the Chicago Theological Seminary Fellowship Award.

In the summer of 2008, Hawkins launched the "It's Cool to Stay In School" program in Lake County, Ind.

Ex-officio member Brooks Fetters is president of the Huntington University Foundation Board of Directors. He serves as the location manager, funeral director and embalmer at Myers Funeral Homes in Huntington. He holds a Master of Christian Ministry degree in pastoral ministries and Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Huntington University. He also earned a diploma in funeral service from the Mid-America College of Funeral Service.

In addition, he is an ordained minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. He was the founding pastor of North Summit Church in Fort Wayne, the senior pastor of Union Chapel Church in Fort Wayne and associate pastor of Harvest Lane Church in Toledo.

Fetters is active in numerous civic and professional organizations including the United Way of Huntington County, Huntington Rotary Club, the City of Huntington Common Council and the National Funeral Director's Association.

Dalton Jenkins serves as the pastor of Bethel Temple of Praise Church of the United Brethren in Christ in Yonkers, N.Y. He has been in ministry for more than 27 years and has served in various capacities in different churches. He was ordained and licensed as a minister affiliated with the City of Faith Church Of God ministries. He also received his license as a minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.

Jenkins holds a Master of Divinity degree and a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Andersonville Theological Seminary. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from City University of New York at Herbert Lehman College.

Jenkins migrated to the United States from Jamaica in January 1988, and became a citizen in 1993. In August 1992, he married his wife, Jacqueline, and they have two boys, Jonathon and Justin.

Curie, Hawkins and Jenkins' terms end in 2012 at which point they will be eligible for reelection.
