Huntington University offers married student retreat

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington University students have an opportunity to participate in the second annual married student retreat from April 8-9, 2006, at the Holiday Inn in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Dr. Steve Lee, professor of psychology, and Prof. Twyla Lee, director of social work education, will coordinate the event. Activities will include sessions on keeping marriage great, couple and group interaction, exploration of downtown Fort Wayne, a celebration banquet, and a service on Sunday morning.

Dr. Tim and Mrs. Amy Gardner will serve as guest speakers for the retreat. Tim is the author of Sacred Sex and is the director of The Marriage Education and Policy Center at the Indiana Family Institute, an affiliate of Focus on the Family.

It is a great opportunity to be with others that deal with the same issues, said Twyla Lee. Married students are a minority group on campus, and it is good for them to know that they are not alone.

Shane and Jill (Coughlin) Haskins were among those who attended the retreat last year. Shane is a freshman biology major, and Jill is a senior elementary education major. They reside in Huntington, Ind.

It got us thinking as a couple about what our dreams were for not only us as a couple, but as individuals, and how those dreams affected our relationship, Jill said. It gave us an opportunity to spend time with other young couples that were dealing with a lot of the same issues as we were.

Jill and Shane plan on attending this year and say they are looking forward to a relaxing and encouraging weekend.

The event will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and end by noon on Sunday. Some of the activities will include group sessions and interaction, an exploration of downtown Fort Wayne, Saturday evening dinner and a Sunday morning service. It is available to any couples that have at least one Huntington University student.

Because of the acquisition of grant monies, the cost per couple is $20. That includes the room, dinner, and events. Couples will be on their own for breakfast and lunch.
