Huntington’s January Term offers variety of courses

Huntington, Ind.-Want to learn how to better manage money? Need advice about handling conflict? Desire to travel abroad to Italy or China? Huntington University's January Term 2007 offers courses that address these questions and more. Eight off-campus and 25 on-campus classes spanning two and a half weeks give students a chance to delve into a single subject in-depth. January Term begins on Jan. 8 and ends Jan. 24.
"January Term is designed to provide a unique educational experience for students and faculty by encouraging flexibility, innovation, experimentation, creativity, and fresh, stimulating approaches to topics of study," according to the academic catalog.
Students taking "Art and Architecture of Italy" will spend 12 days and 10 nights exploring Venice, Florence, San Gimignano, Sienna and Rome. Highlights include St. Mark's Cathedral, the Coliseum and the Sistine Chapel.
"More Than Smuggled Bibles and Secret Gatherings: The Church in China Today" gives participants a chance to experience firsthand the variety of contemporary Christian experiences in China. Students will interact with leaders of unregistered house churches as well as leaders of the government-approved Three-Self Church.
Several life skills courses will be offered. "Show Me the Money!" addresses personal finance issues including budgeting income and expenses, managing credit, purchasing a home, buying insurance and investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Students who wish to learn how to communicate effectively and handle conflict productively may take "The Yin and Yang of Conflict." "Healthy Eating for Weight Management" will teach participants to examine their personal lifestyles and eating habits as well as learn skills relevant for permanent weight loss and maintenance.
Students also may indulge their creative sides with "Introduction to Calligraphy" or "Pinhole Photography," study methods of coding in "How to Unstir Alphabet Soup: Introduction to Mathematical Cryptanalysis," examine foundational, cultural and theological currents in "Exploring Emerging Worship" and learn why referees make the calls they do in "Basketball Officiating."
