Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi inducts 16 scholars

Sixteen HC students were inducted into Alpha Chi on October 3.
Huntington, Ind. " Huntington College welcomed 16 new members into the Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi in a convocation held today in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Students were recognized for their superior academics and exceptional character.
Membership in Alpha Chi is the highest academic honor at Huntington College and represents both a recognition of scholastic achievement and a commitment to promoting academic excellence on and off campus, said Dr. Paul E. Michelson, Distinguished Professor of History and chapter sponsor for the Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi.
The following students at Huntington College received induction into Alpha Chi in 2003:
Sara B. Blain: Blaine is a Bible and Religion major from Washington Court House, Ohio. She is the daughter of Bill and Glenna Rowe. At Huntington, Blaine volunteers her time working with local service organizations, Pathfinder Services and Angelworx. She teaches a Sunday School class and works for the Bible and Religion department. Her career interest is to become a professor of New Testament Studies.
Amanda Burge: Burge is a business management major from Wabash, Ind. She is the daughter of Carl and Tamra Sovine. Her career interest is to become a business executive.
Emily K. Burkholder: Burkholder is a history and English double major from West Unity, Ohio. She is the daughter of Dennis and Rebekah Burkholder. At Huntington, Burkholder is a member of the women's softball team.
Joshua Ryan Dawes: Dawes is an English education major from Leesburg, Ind. He is the son of Brian and Donna Dawes. At Huntington, Dawes has served as a resident assistant and been involved in HC Theatre productions, including the nine-week summer tour of Cotton Patch Gospel. His career interest is to become a high school English teacher and teach theatre courses.
Keith N. Elliott: Elliott is a Bible and Religion major from Chambersburg, Pa. He is the son of Barry and Charlotte Elliott. His career interest is to become a pastor or a professor.
Renae L. Flora: Flora is a psychology major from Greenville, Ohio. She is the daughter of Calvin and Linda Flora. At Huntington, Flora has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service's Bingo Buddies. She was a member of the 2002 mission team to Haiti, a member of the women's softball team, a member of the student admissions staff and served as a resident assistant and tutor. Her career interest is to become either a guidance counselor or social worker.
Kyleigh Nicole Gast: Gast is an elementary education major from Claypool, Ind. She is the daughter of Mark and Kathy Gast. At Huntington, Gast is a member of the women's tennis team, Alpha Gamma Pi and has volunteered with the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service. Her career interest is to become an elementary school teacher.
Stacey Nicole Maifeld: Maifeld is an exercise science major from Fort Wayne, Ind. She is the daughter of Roger and Connie Maifeld. At Huntington, Maifeld is a member of the women's basketball team and volunteers with the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service. Her career interest is to become a physical therapist.
Jodie Maller: Maller is a math education major from Bluffton, Ind. She is the daughter of Steve and Cindy Maller. At Huntington, Maller is a member of the education honor society (Kappa Delta Pi) and volunteers as a tutor for local high school students. Her career interest is to become a high school math teacher.
Lori Catherine Merkle: Merkle is an elementary education major from Walton, Ky. She is the daughter of John and Donna Merkle. At Huntington, Merkle is a member of the education honor society (Kappa Delta Pi) and the worship ensemble. She also teaches Sunday School and sings with the Huntington Baptist Church Praise Team. Her career interest is to go into teaching or speech-language pathology.
Dwight Simon: Simon is a history major from Roanoke, Ind. He is the son of Stephen and Mary Simon. At Huntington, Simon is a student leader for the Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service, a staff writer for the campus newspaper and a member of student senate.
Katherine S. Sjoberg: Sjoberg is a sociology major from Grabill, Ind. She is the daughter of David and Susie Sjoberg. At Huntington, she has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Her career interest is to become a social worker.
Jennifer C. Stults: Stults is an English education major from Huntington, Ind. She is the daughter of Dave and Becky Kersey. At Huntington, she is a member of Sigma Tau Delta (the English honor society) and serves as a tutor in the Learning Center. Her career interest is to become a teacher.
Christina L. Watson: Watson is a choral music education major from Chambersburg, Pa. She is the daughter of Glenn and Deborah Watson. At Huntington, Watson is a member and an accompanist of the Concert Choir, Handbell Ensemble and Wind Ensemble. Her career interest is to become a high school choral director.
Two individuals were inducted in absentia. They were:
Rebecca Laumbattus: Laumbattus is a sociology major from Marissa, Ill. She is the daughter of Kevin and Jane Laumbattus. This semester, she is studying with the Semester in Spain program.
Rachel Tinon: Tinon is an English major from Pataskala, Ohio. She is the daughter of Stanley and Adelle Tinon. This semester, she is studying with the Honours Programme in Oxford, England.
Alpha Chi is a national honor society for undergraduate juniors and seniors in all academic disciplines. In 1997, it celebrated 75 years of activity. Its objectives are the stimulation, development and recognition of scholarship and those elements of scholarship that make scholarship effective for good.
The Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society was established in 1967. It is active in the regional and national activities of Alpha Chi and was named the National Chapter of the Year in 2001. This past year, for the eighth consecutive year, The Indiana Beta Chapter was selected as a Star Chapter of Alpha Chi.
The motto of Alpha Chi nationally is the same as that of Huntington College: You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.
