J-Term offers students wealth of unique experiences

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington University students returning to campus next week have a wealth of unique experiences awaiting them. Courses in digital filmmaking, C.S. Lewis's Narnia, natural disasters, genealogy, and mime were just a few of the on-campus offerings for this year's January Term. Off-campus, students will travel to the Holy Land, the Gulf Coast, Uganda, the Everglades, Michigan, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Paris, France.
January Term is designed to provide a unique educational experience for students and faculty by encouraging flexibility, innovation, experimentation, creativity, and fresh, stimulating approaches to topics of study, according to the academic catalog.
The University requires bachelor's degree students to take three January Term courses. Freshmen and sophomores must enroll in a January Term course.
The 13-day term allows rigorous and extensive study in one subject area chosen from specialized courses that differ from typical semester courses. The University encourages students to participate in January Term's off-campus learning experiences. Many cost considerably less than individually arranged travel.
Closed or full January-Term courses include Study Tour of the Holy Land, The Great American (Postmodern) Novel: Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves, C.S. Lewis's Narnia, Nature's Nasties, Tracing Your Roots, and Mime: The Art of Silence.
Dr. Paul Michelson, distinguished professor of history, will delve into C.S. Lewis's magical world of Narnia, recently given much attention through the release of the Walt Disney movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Students enrolled in Study Tour of the Holy Land will learn about and walk the streets of significant Biblical sites such as Galilee, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Jericho with Dr. Mark Fairchild, professor of Bible & religion. Professor Kristie Worfel will introduce students to French-style mime and discuss the attitudes, isolations, and senses associated with this art.
January Term begins Tuesday, January 3, 2006, and ends Thursday, January 19, 2006.
