J-Term offers unique learning opportunities
Huntington, Ind. " After a few quiet weeks on the Huntington College campus, students have returned for the usual hustle and bustle of January-Term, an intensive three-week interim that includes a wide-variety of courses offered both on- and off-campus. With over 30 classes offered, several courses integrate academic study with Christian service.
During J-Term, students are able to explore many unique learning opportunities. Twenty students will travel to Camp Michindoh in Hillsdale, Mich., to serve as cabin leaders, teachers and activity leaders to sixth graders from the Toledo, Ohio public school system.
Several HC students will live in dormitory-style facilities at the Olive Branch Mission in the heart of Chicago. They will experience the urban community first-hand and examine issues of poverty, racism, sociology, community development and social justice through the lens of Christian faith.
Divine Secrets of the Yahweh Sisterhood offers a group of female students the opportunity to explore the study of relationships and friendships. This course will end with a four-day Christian women's retreat cruise to the Bahamas.
On-campus courses will examine topics ranging from cartooning to crisis management, from astronomy to the Human Genome. For example, Hogwarts and Huntington will address what a Christian is to do with Harry Potter. The course will examine the controversy thorough reading selections from the series and major analysis of the books by Christian writers.
The Big Bang Theory, Theatre Style will provide students the answers on various theatre effects. Discussion and hands-on training will include fogging, haze, pyrotechnics, performer rigging/flying and other theatre special effects.

Cartooning: Inka-Dinka-Do " Explores the art of cartooning as an enjoyable pastime and as a potential business.
Risky Business (Crisis Management) " From the Exxon Valdez in Alaska to tainted Coke in Europe, students will learn through case studies how to evaluate the appropriate response to a crisis, accept responsibility and communicate with employees, customers and the press.
Biblical Financial Principles: God's Perspectives on Finances " Teaches the practical financial principles of scripture, encouraging a more intimate fellowship with Christ as Lord.
A Cup of This, A Pinch of That (Human Genome Project Study) " Discusses the history of the Human Genome Project, the techniques used and what they have meant to the success of this massive, international research project.
The X-Files: Quest for Truth " Examines the historical nature of The X-Files series, watching several key episodes that pertain to the mythological story arc and the detective's encounters with the supernatural.
Classics of Christian Spirituality " Explores the historical roots of evangelical Christian spirituality through selected readings of Thomas Kempis' Imitation of Christ, John Bunyon's Pilgrim's Progress and John Wesley's Journal.
Cross-Cultural Encounters " Examines various models for understanding cultural differences while learning to identify cultural differences and recognizing how they create confusion for intercultural communicators in social, academic and business situations.
Tall Tales: The Folk Tradition & U.S. " Explores American folk stories, such as Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed, to provide insight into the development of American identity and illuminate the goals, aspirations, values and commitments of Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The American Woman in Sport " Explores how sociological changes have influenced women's roles in sport including the history of women in sport and contemporary issues in athletics.
Backyard Astronomy " Focuses on astronomy students can appreciate from their own backyard " objects visible to the naked eye or with the aid of binoculars.
Problem of Evil and Other Arguments Against the Existence of God " Considers the nature and possibility of success of the problem of evil as an argument against the existence of God.
Overcoming Stagefright " Introduces students who have an aversion to onstage performance to a variety of theatre performance skills, studying the psychological and physiological nature of stagefright.
