Jordan Phillips takes Forester Speak-Off honors

Huntington, Ind. " Five Huntington College student speakers recently competed in the 2003 Spring Semester Great Forester Speak-Off. The speak-off showcases the persuasive skills of Huntington College's finest student speakers who are enrolled in speech classes for the current semester. Jordan Phillips, a senior chemistry major from Mansfield, Ohio, took first place for his speech about the tensions between patriotism and Christian faith. Second place went to Dana Siferd, a sophomore youth ministries major from McComb, Ohio, who addressed the adoption of children by homosexual couples.
The other three finalists were Chad Pryor, a freshman business management major from Sheridan, Ind., who spoke against affirmative action within the college and university system; Catharine Tapp, a freshman elementary education major from Fort Wayne, Ind., who advocated for action to help feed the poor of the world; and Ashley Gonterman, a freshman physical education major from Roanoke, Ind., who argued against downloading copy written material off the internet.
The Forester Speak-Off is designed to showcase the persuasive skills of Huntington College communication students. The positions taken in the event do not necessarily reflect the views of the College or of the students themselves. Often, students pick intentionally controversial topics in order to test their argumentative abilities.
