Julie Porter swaps roles with President Dowden

Huntington, Ind. "Huntington College's Julie Porter, a sophomore music major from Addison, Mich., has the privilege of being president-for-a-day at Huntington College today. Porter was the winner of Operation S.W.A.P. (switch with a president), a Student Senate fundraiser to help enhance funds for the Fund Allocation Committee, a committee that supports various student-centered events.

Student Senate seeks to build strong relationships with the administration and faculty of Huntington College and to establish traditions on campus for the student population. Dr. Dowden and Senate partnered together to sponsor Operation S.W.A.P. to raise money last spring. In its inaugural year, S.W.A.P. has garnered much enthusiasm on campus. Over 75 students participated in this semester's drawing.

Porter will spend her day meeting with key members of the local and campus community. She will meet with Huntington mayor, Terry Abbett, in the morning followed by breakfast with United Brethren Bishop Paul Hirschy and Trustee Gary Dilley. Before lunch, Porter will spend some time with the Executive to the President, Sharon Givler. Porter will then meet Mrs. Dowden and President Dowden's mother, Ruth, for lunch at the President's home and finish the day in meetings with Cindy Steruy, Assistant Dean of the College; Ron Coffey, Vice President for Student Development; and Jeff Berggren, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing.

Dowden will fulfill a typical Tuesday in Porter's life, one in which she is typically booked solid from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. He is scheduled to attend Chapel at 10 a.m., Introduction to Education at 11 a.m., Worship Ensemble at noon, Class Guitar I at 1 p.m., English/German Dictation at 2 p.m., Class Piano III at 3 p.m., and Voice Lessons with Professor Thompson at 4 p.m. With a schedule that full, Dowden will have to make some tough decisions " does he skip chapel or does he skip lunch?

Porter is the daughter of Keith and Jean Anne Porter. She is actively involved in student senate, serving as the sophomore class president. Porter has also participated on the Forester cross country and track and field teams.
