Lee, Lyons Honored at Huntington College
HUNTINGTON, IN MAY 17, 1996 --- Huntington College president G. Blair Dowden announced the Professor of the Year and Staff Member of the Year at the school's annual Commencement Appreciation Banquet last night.
Dr. Steve Lee was selected by the student body as Professor of the Year. Lee has taught psychology for ten years at Huntington College. He is co-author of Boys to Men, a book offering practical strategies for parenting adolescent sons. Released last May by Moody Press, the book is now in its second printing.
"Today, what it means to be a man, and just when the transformation from boyhood to manhood takes place, is up for grabs at best and culturally ignored at worst," argues Lee. "But our sons will still need to be taught just what defines a man. They need to know in what ways they differ from girls, what is expected of them as they grow, and receive clear makers which tell them that they are progressing in their journey toward maturity."
Lee earned his BA from Bethel College, MS from North Dakota State University, and Ed.D. from the University of South Dakota. He chairs the Department of Psychology at Huntington College. Along with nurturing two sons, Trevor and Ryan, Steve and his wife, Twyla, are partners in leading marriage and family workshops.
Becky Lyons was named Staff Member of the Year. Lyons has served as Huntington College's bookkeeper for the past five years. Nominated by her peers, Lyons was selected for the award by College administrators.
Comments on anonymous nomination forms illustrate why Lyons was selected for the honor.
"Becky is extremely helpful to students and will do anything to help them in any way," said one co-worker. Another described her as "hard-working, loyal, and dedicated to the job and to the College. She is willing to put in extra time if asked, just to finish some task or project that needs to be done. Becky is a steady and dependable person. She is always gracious when asked to do something, even if it's not her responsibility."
"Becky is a jewel!" wrote another colleague. "She has a real heart for Huntington College and a real love for students. She is always willing to take on projects and completes them in an accurate manner and with a positive attitude. Although she is content to work and#145;behind the scenes,and#146; Becky deserves recognition for her dedication to Huntington College."
The Commencement Appreciation Dinner was begun in 1981 for the purposes of honoring Huntington College personnel for their years of faithful service. The Dinner provides a setting for bringing public recognition to employees and expressing special thanks those who have reached milestones in their service to Huntington College.

Robert Kaehr, Director of Library Services and Assistant Professor in Library Science was recognized for twenty years of service to Huntington College. He was presented with a set of wood carving tools.
Francis Jones, Professor of Mathematical Sciences was honored for twenty-five years of service to Huntington College. Dr. Jones was presented with a watch.
