Local student selected as UPS Scholar

HUNTINGTON, IN OCTOBER 31, 1996 --- Jessica Ellenwood, a Huntington College junior pursuing a degree in educational ministries, has been selected as a UPS Scholar and recipient of a 1996-97 academic scholarship. The 1994 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School is the daughter of Gary and Karen Ellenwood of Akron, Indiana.

Miss Ellenwood joins 30 Indiana students who are sharing $82,500 in scholarships from the UPS Foundation's educational endowment fund.

The UPS endowment fund, administered by the Chicago-based Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE), has grown this year to provide $1.7 million in scholarships and financial aid to 626 of the nation's private colleges and universities.

Selection of the UPS Scholars was determined independently on each campus. Ellenwood was cited for her work as a student leader for the local Youth for Christ organization, as well as volunteering with the College's Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service.

The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of United Parcel Service, originally established the educational fund with $4.2 million in endowment in 1974. Since that time, more than $18.8 million has been provided in scholarships and student aid.

"We are proud of our continuing association with FIHE, an organization which supports the distinctive values and contributions of America's independent colleges and universities," stated Gary Lee, executive director of the UPS Foundation. "Member institutions provide diverse educational programs which correspond to a variety of student needs and interests."

Lee added that The UPS Foundation encourages other companies and individual donors to consider involvement with the FIHE programs. "Sound fiscal management of a fund such as the one administered by FIHE will result in consistent growth for the initial investment."

Beyond its effectiveness as a link between business community and independent colleges, FIHE serves both corporations and private foundations by developing targeted programs to meet donors' philanthropic goals. Since it was founded in 1958, FIHE and its member associations have received more than $1 billion in support for independent higher education across the country.
