Local students win speech competition

Huntington, Ind. "Over 100 people were on hand on Wednesday, May 3, as the Communications Department of Huntington College held its biannual student speech competition, the Great Forester Speak Off. The event began at 7 p.m. in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The crowd enjoyed a diverse series of presentations by students in speech classes taught by Dr. Mike Rowley and Dr. Chris Leland. The competitors were this semester's top eight persuasive speakers, selected by their peers and professors. The winners were:
1st place " Jennifer Herring, a freshman Oral Communications major from Caledonia, MI, who spoke about our country's need for school choice programs.
2nd place " Brad Sever, a sophomore History Education major from Franklin, IN, who spoke about the right to vote.
3rd place " Heather Hirschy, a senior Business Management and History major from Huntington, IN, who warned about some Christian leaders' unfortunate connections to political parties.
4th place " Kendra Hiney, a sophomore Elementary Education major from Bowling Green, OH, who extolled the virtues of home-schooling.
Other finalists included Jenny Rhodes, Andrew Witmer, Lindsey Jones, and Natalie Smith.
Each winner was awarded the privilege of being exempt from the speech course's final exam. Dr. Chris Leland, associate professor of communication, said, This year's well-attended competition is evidence of the great student talent at the college, and speaks well of our success in preparing students to impact our world for Christ.
Oral communication is among nearly 50 academic programs available at the four-year, Christian liberal arts college.
