Longaker Recital Scheduled

HUNTINGTON, IN NOVEMBER 15, 1996 --- The Longaker Recital, a showcase of Huntington College's best musical talent, will be presented on Tuesday, November 26, 1996. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. in the Longaker Recital Hall of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on the campus of Huntington College.

The public is cordially invited to attend. Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for students.

Huntington College's best student musicians must audition to participate in the Longaker Recital. This year's honored performers include:

  • Jeanette Lundeen, a soprano from Ossian, Indiana. She will sing "Music, Music, Music" from Marc Blitzstein's Regina, accompanied by pianist Jean Flint.
  • Aaron Johnson, a tenor from Ossian, Indiana. He will perform "Nina" by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, accompanied by pianist Sandra Birdsall.
  • Elizabeth Smith, a soprano from Woodland, Michigan. She will sing "Troppo Soavi I Gusti" (Many and Sweet the Raptures) by Fancesco Cavalli, accompanied by pianist Bonnie Stephan.
  • Kim Houston, a mezzo soprano from Hammond, Indiana. She will sing "MonCoeur S'vouvre a ta Voix" from Camille Saint-Saens' Samson and Dalila accompanied by pianist Bonnie Stephan. Later in the program, Miss Houston will return to the stage to perform Aram Khachaturian's Toccata on the piano.
  • Hersel Cremeans, a baritone from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. He will sing Nicola Vaccai's "L'Addio" accompanied by pianist Jean Flint.
  • Andy Brandon, a baritone from Fremont, Ohio. He will perform "L'abbandonata" (The Forsaken One) by Saverio Mercadante, accompanied by pianist Sandra Birdsall. Later in the program, Mr. Brandon will return to the stage to perform two Chopin piano Etudes.
  • Sarah Andrews a violinist from Martinsville, Indiana. She will present two movements of Bela Bartok's Rumanische Volestanze accompanied by pianist Sandra Birdsall.
  • Stacey Osmun a clarinetist from Delaware, New Jersey. She will present Paul Hindemith's "Sonate fur Klarine He (B) und piano" accompanied by Jean Flint.
  • Marvin McNew of Huntington, Indiana, who will perform two movements from Handel's Sonata VI on the alto saxophone.
  • Caleb Nei, a pianist from Huntington, Indiana, who will present two movements from Alberto Ginastera's American Preludes.

Dr. David Wallis, professor of music, explains that this recital features the very best performers at Huntington College. "It is a celebration of their ability to do outstanding, different literature. A fair amount of expertise is reuired. These students need to perform well beyond the typical."

The Longaker Recital was created at Huntington College to accommodate the rising number and quality of music students. "Our big change, because of the level of talent we are attracting, is that we have higher expectations," Wallis explains. "Competition for this performance is stiffer."
