Master of Education program has strong beginning

Huntington, Ind. " Classes are underway in Huntington College's new Master of Education program, with courses receiving solid feedback from students and faculty alike. Dr. Terrell Peace, professor of education at the College, said, "Students have expressed appreciation that these are real classes interested in helping teachers where they are, not some 'canned' presentation by a person who has no connection to the schools."
In addition, Peace pointed to the positives of the program's structure. The Master of Education program allows students to begin the coursework right away and apply for admission later or take classes at their own pace to complete the degree. Classes are offered at night and during the summer, which fits teachers' schedules. The program also fills a need in the surrounding area, as location, in conjunction with the night classes, offers area teachers opportunities for easy access to graduate classes. "I know there are a lot of potential students in the surrounding counties, where teachers do not have a lot of options for graduate studies," Peace said.
The small-school atmosphere is another plus. "We have one student who drives all the way from Hicksville, Ohio, [about an hour away] to take classes in a welcoming Christian environment," Peace said.
The College currently offers master's degrees in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction; Elementary Reading; Early Adolescent (Middle School) Math, Social Studies and Language Arts Education; and Adolescent and Young Adult (High School) Math, Social Studies, English, Biology, and Chemistry Education.
Peace said Huntington might add Educational Leadership and Physical Education degrees in the future.
