Math competition showcases young talent

Huntington, Ind. " The semiannual Huntington College High School Mathematics Competition took place Wednesday, October 20, 2004, in Science Hall at Huntington College. Ten area high school teams met to compete for individual and team awards for their demonstration of mathematical ability. The teams were comprised of Ayersville High School of Defiance (OH); Friendship Christian School of Andrews.; KASH (Kokomo Area Schools at Home) of Kokomo; Marion High School of Marion; North Miami High School of Denver; Jimtown High School of Elkhart; Hamilton Southeastern of Fishers; Rochester High School of Rochester; South Bend Clay of South Bend; and Temple Christian School of Lima (OH). This year's winner, a returning champion, was Hamilton Southeastern High School with a total of 525 points. Second place went to South Bend Clay with 420 points. Brian Thomas, a junior at South Bend Clay, received the gold medal while teammate Aaron Hershberger received the bronze for third. Ayersville's Nick Maag earned second-place honors and the silver medal.
The mathematics competition is made up of three rounds. The first round is a 20 question written exam comprised of questions from algebra to calculus. Students can earn a total of 100 points for the exam. The individual round of the competition is made up of 10 questions. Students are given two minutes to complete each question. Questions answered correctly within the first minute award the student with 10 points while questions answered correctly in the second minute receive 5 points. The final round, the team round, provides additional points for the team score. Students are provided with a multi-task problem that is best solved through the cooperative efforts of the team. A total of 50 points was possible for this final round.
Dr. Patrick Eggleton, associate professor of mathematics at Huntington College, coordinated the competition. Mathematics majors provided assistance in organizing and implementing the competition. The goal of the competition was to support and encourage the efforts of students seeking to achieve in mathematics. Huntington College provides the competition semiannually.
