Mathematics competition yields six winners
Huntington, Ind.-Wednesday, Huntington University held its first annual Middle Grades Mathematics Competition. There were 15 four-member teams from area schools in Indiana and Ohio. The competition was run by Huntington University freshman Joshua Fitzgerald who served as student coordinator alongside supervising professor, Dr. Patrick Eggleton, associate professor of mathematics. Fitzgerald is a mathematics education major from New Haven, Ind.
Students began with a 20 multiple-choice question written test, followed by a quick-response individual round. After lunch, the teams worked together on one final round of questions before top honors were awarded to the three best teams and three best individuals.
The top three schools in the competition were first place: Garrett Middle School of Garrett, Ind.; second place: Salamonie School of Warren, Ind., and third place, Riverview Middle School of Huntington, Ind. The top three individual medalists were first place: Megan Getts of Garrett Middle School, second place: Dylan Simpson of Queen of Angels School, and third place: Xi Zheng of South Side Middle School.
