Montana to speak at August leadership luncheon

Huntington, Ind.-On Aug. 27, the Huntington University Center for Leadership will host a leadership luncheon open to business and community leaders. The luncheon will feature Melissa Montana, a 25-year veteran of the radio industry. She has served as the general manager of STAR 88.3 for 10 years and is the CEO/president of STAR Educational Media Network. In addition, she has become a well-known radio personality in the Northeast Indiana area as well as nationally.
Montana's presentation is titled "Moving from Good to Great: The Value of Excellence," focusing on how, as Christians, "'good' shouldn't be enough."
"When leaders think that they can do whatever they want because they have 'the position,'" she said, "that is when it becomes dangerous."
Montana wants to challenge leaders in any type of business to "be the difference." Mediocrity is accepted in the modern-day work place, but she believes that Christians have the opportunity to raise the bar and show others that they aren't just "people in a box" but that they can be the best in everything they do.
The luncheon will be held in the upper level of Habecker Dining Commons from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $20, and it includes lunch. Discounts are available when two or more attend from the same business or organization. To register, call (800) 600-4888. Walk-ins also are accepted.
This event is part of a series of luncheons that is offered on the fourth Thursday of every month.
The Huntington University Center for Leadership is housed on the university's campus in the EXCEL Adult Degree Programs office. Under the direction of Dr. Rick Upchurch, director of the EXCEL program, the CFL provides leadership training and resources to businesses, community leaders and pastors in northern Indiana.
Melissa Montana became the first female recipient of the 2009 Rob Gregory Award, an honor that recognizes an individual in the radio broadcasting industry for outstanding community advocacy. STAR 88.3 was awarded the 2009 Station of the Year by the Gospel Music Association and Christian Music Broadcasters. In the Fort Wayne Newspapers Annual "Best of," a contest allowing readers to pick their favorites within the community, STAR 88.3 won first place, and Montana was first place in the radio personalities' category.
It was Montana who helped make the transition of new ownership for STAR 88.3 possible as she formed the executive team to purchase the station and won the bid, aided in the alliance formed with Huntington University. Montana is also the founder and host of the annual Adoption Celebration, is a sought-after host for many community functions and a well-known motivational speaker.
