New math professor publishes article

Huntington, Ind. " Dr. Patrick Eggleton, newly appointed mathematics professor at Huntington College, has had an article appear in the current issue of Mathematics Teacher magazine. "Experiencing Radians" is the cover story of the September 1999 issue. "Experiencing Radians" was written to share an activity that I created several years ago to help students gain a better conceptual understanding of the use of radian measure in trigonometry," says Eggleton. "The activity uses the history of the term radian as a wheelwright's measure to develop skill in identifying common radian measures on a circle. The article shares several pictures of students engaged in the activity, folding paper plates and measuring with adding machine tape."
"Albert Einstein said, Most of the fundamental ideas of science are essentially simple, and may, as a rule, be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone.' Hopefully my article has allowed the idea of radian measure to be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone."
Dr. Patrick J. Eggleton joined the faculty of Huntington College this fall as assistant professor of mathematics. He most recently served on the faculty of Berry College in Georgia.
Eggleton completed his BS and MEd degrees at the University of South Florida and his PhD in mathematics education at the University of Georgia. His dissertation was titled, The Evolving Mathematical Philosophy of a Pre-service Mathematics Teacher.
In addition to his teaching at Berry College, Dr. Eggleton taught a mathematics class at a local high school, providing hands-on experience that helped him coach the mathematics student-teachers under his supervision. Eggleton also has five years of public high school teaching experience. He is an active researcher and writer and has also made numerous professional presentations.
Mathematics education is among nearly 50 academic concentrations available at Huntington College. The Christian liberal arts college is located on a contemporary, lakeside campus in Huntington, Indiana.
