Northridge Middle School wins math competition

Huntington, Ind.-On April 22, Huntington University held its annual Middle Grades Math Competition. The competition was held in Zurcher Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on the university's campus. There were 19 teams comprised of a total of 159 sixth through ninth grade participants. This is the largest math competition that Huntington University has hosted. The students competed in three rounds: a multiple-choice test, an individual quick-answer round and a team round. Scores were tallied for each team and each individual. The 19 middle schools that competed included the following: Anderson Christian School in Anderson, Ind.

Bluffton-Harrison Middle School in Bluffton, Ind.
Concord Junior High School in Elkhart, Ind.
Crestview Middle School in Huntington, Ind.
Edgewood Middle School in Warsaw, Ind.
Emmaus Lutheran School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Garrett Middle School in Garrett, Ind.
Lakeview Middle School in Warsaw, Ind.
Milford School in Milford, Ind.
Northridge Middle School in Middlebury, Ind.
Queen of Angels School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Salamonie School in Warren, Ind.
St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
St. Joseph St. Elizabeth School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
St Joseph Grade School in Mishawaka, Ind.
St. Mary's School in Anderson, Ind.
St. Peter-Immanuel Lutheran School in Decatur, Ind.
Woodside Middle School in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Northridge Middle School came in first place with 745 total points. Edgewood Middle School came in second with 655 points, and Concord Junior High School came in third with 630.
After a two-way tie breaker for first place and a four-way tie breaker for third place, the placing individual contestants were Jamin Hershberger, an eighth grader from Northridge Middle School who scored 195 points and came in first place; Blaine Aschliman, an eighth grader from Adams Central Middle School who scored 195 points and came in second place; and Alexandra Hochstetler, an eighth grader from Northridge Middle School who also scored 190 points and came in third place.
This is the eighth year for the semiannual competition. The contest is coordinated by Huntington University junior Joshua Fitzgerald, a mathematics education major from New Haven, Ind., with supervision and assistance from Dr. Bobbi Buchholz and Dr. Jeff Lehman.
