Spring Music Concert Scheduled
HUNTINGTON, IN April 30, 1996 ---The Spring Music Concert, a showcase of the Huntington College Music Department, will be presented on Friday, May 3, 1996.
The concert will feature a wide variety of musical styles, and will showcase the talents of Huntington College students involved with the Chamber Orchestra, Cantorei, Wind Ensemble, and Concert Choir.
Dr. Marlene Schleiffer, Huntington College professor of music, will direct the Chamber Orchestra. Selections include Handel's "Suite from the Water Music," Cimarosa's "Siciliana" from Concerto for Oboe and Strings featuring Andrea Adang on the oboe, and Mozart's "Overture: The Impressario."
Schleiffer will also direct the Wind Ensemble, who will perform such masterpieces as Chambers' "March: Northwind," Mozart's "Overture: Titus" from the opera La Clemenza di Tito, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," featuring pianist Andy Brandon, and "Irving Berlin Showstoppers," arranged for wind ensemble by Higgins.
Carrie Donahue, adjunct professor of music, will direct the Cantorei as they perform numbers ranging from Michael Praetorius' "Jubilate Deo," to the American Folk tune "The Water is Wide." They will also be performing William Byrd's "Non Nobis, Domine," Sherri Porterfield's "What Do the Stars Do?," Marta Keen's "Homeward Bound," and the American Folk hymn "Wondrous Love."
Dr. David Wallis, assistant professor of music, will direct the Concert Choir as they perform renditions of Knut Nystedt's "I Will Praise Thee, O Lord," Johannes Brahm's "Grant Unto Me," Heinrich Schutz's "Cantate Domino," Kirby Shaw's "Sing Praise To God" featuring soloist Sam Ward, and "Dry Bones," arranged by Livingston Gearhart.
The performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. on the mainstage of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. A prelude will be provided by the Chamber Orchestra beginning at 6:45 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
