Student artists honored at exhibit
HUNTINGTON, IN MAY 8, 1996 --- "I was most struck by work that not only demonstrated competence but expressed ideas in a way that I found beautiful, mysterious or clever," said Nancy McCroskey, associate professor at IPFW, about the 6th annual Huntington College Art Department Show. McCroskey was selected as this year's guest juror. The show opened April 27 in the Robert E. Wilson Art Gallery of the Merillat Centre for the Arts.
McCroskey judged works from seven different catagories: Drawing, Graphic Design/Illustration, Ceramics, Photography I, Advanced Photography, Painting/Printmaking, and 2-D Design. Works were selected from both the 1995-96 academic year and from 1995's spring semester. This allowed students to enter work finished after last year's show. It also gave students doing independent studies a chance to show off their accomplishments.
"Powerful show," said Professor Ken Hopper, chair of Huntington College's art department. "It shows the range of diversity in the amassed skills our students have accumulated studying here in the department."
Merit awards were given along with one Outstanding award for each division. Best of Show was awarded to Braden Woods for her black and white photograph entitled, "...and Every Branch." The piece will be purchased by Huntington College and added to the permanent collection of the Robert E. Wilson Gallery.
Rebecca Coffman, associate art professor at Huntington College described the show as "reflective of the hard work that they [the students] have experienced in the past year. Its a nice celebration of the end of the year."
The student exhibition will continue through May 18. The Robert E. Wilson Gallery is located in the Merillat Centre for the Arts on the Huntington College campus. The gallery is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For further information call 356-6000 ext. 2060
