Student newspaper, journalist win first place awards

Huntington, Ind.-The Baptist Press recently recognized Huntington University's student newspaper and a student journalist at its "Excellence in Journalism" conference. Awards in 32 categories including writing, photography, yearbook, Internet journalism and broadcast journalism were presented Oct. 11-13 during the collegiate journalism conference.
Sarah Lang, a senior journalism major from Findlay, Ohio, tied for first place in the news story category. Chansin Bird of Belmont University was the other first place recipient.

Lang's story was about the campus radio station, The Fuse: 105.5 FM, changing its format from exclusively Christian recording artists to a mix of Christian and secular artists.
"It's exciting that the story placed because it was one that I really wanted to work on," Lang said. "I jumped on the opportunity when the idea came up at a planning meeting. The topic really interested me, and I had a good time working on it. But I still can't believe that it took first place! It's a great feeling."
The Huntingtonian, the university's student newspaper, won first place in the overall newspaper - division I category. The Huntingtonian is produced four times a semester, and current and past issues are available online at www.huntington.edu/newspaper.
"Sarah Goddard did an outstanding job as editor last year in leading the newspaper and in covering campus events and personalities and issues in interesting yet balanced ways," said Dr. Kevin Miller, faculty advisor for the newspaper. "The reporters and the designers are professionals in my opinion - and in the opinions of the journalism experts judging the Huntingtonian newspaper as tops."
Both Goddard and Lang were chosen for Eugene S. Pulliam Internships in the summer of 2007. Lang interned at the Huntington Herald-Press. Goddard, a senior journalism major from Spencer, Ind., worked at the Reporter-Times in Martinsville, Ind.
The Baptist Press Collegiate Journalism Conference, held at the Sheraton Music City in Nashville, Tenn., featured keynote addresses by Christian journalists Manny Garcia, Don Boykin and Gary Fong. Conference workshops covered such topics as news writing, photography, broadcast journalism and feature writing.
Attendees included 150 students, faculty and guests.
Christian recording artists Everyday Driven led music for the conference, and the event featured a dialogue for faculty advisors on how student journalists can cover difficult stories on their campuses.
